Why Scrap Circuit?

E-waste is more than just trash — it holds your data and WNC's future. We take both seriously.

Data destroyed, guaranteed

Every drive is wiped or shredded to NIST 800-88 standards. No exceptions, no extra fees.

Local to Asheville

We're your neighbors. Nothing gets shipped across the country to some unknown facility.

Inventory transparency

Businesses get a full inventory manifest. Need per-drive certificates? We do those too.

Flexible pickup

Pickup truck or trailer — we ask what you've got first, so we show up with the right vehicle.

Simple, honest pricing

Two kinds of customers, two kinds of pricing. Outside our 10-mile pickup radius? Drop-off is always free.

Screen & TV disposal fees

Monitors, TVs, plasmas, and CRTs carry a per-unit recycling fee on top of your pickup or drop-off — leaded glass and hazardous components require special handling and EPA-compliant disposal.

$15/ea
Flat-screen LCD / LED / OLED

Add-ons & extras

Optional services available on top of your pickup. All prices include tax and labor.

Certificate of Destruction$25 per drive

Individually serialized certificate per drive or device for audit, compliance, or your own records. Required for HIPAA / regulated data in most cases.

Rush or out-of-radius pickupQuoted

Outside the 10-mile radius, or need it done faster than our standard scheduling window? Get a quote — we'll take care of it.

Your data is gone. For good.

Every hard drive, SSD, phone, and flash storage device we receive is sanitized to NIST Special Publication 800-88 standards before the device leaves our facility.

  • Cryptographic erase or multi-pass overwrite for working drives
  • Physical destruction / shredding for drives that fail sanitization
  • Data destruction guarantee included with every pickup and drop-off
  • Per-drive certificates available for audit trail ($25/drive)
Standard
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1

Cash offer — not recycling

Computer less than 3 years old?
Get cash for it instead.

If your laptop or desktop is under 3 years old, it's almost always worth more as cash than as scrap — even with issues like a cracked screen, dead battery, or a system that won't boot. We buy them at our sister shop, Biltmore Computers (same address as drop-off), and turn around and refurbish them.

What we buy: laptops, desktops, and all-in-ones less than ~3 years old — even if they have problems we can repair (water damage, broken hinges, cracked screens, dead drives, etc.). Newer iPads and high-end phones too. Older or non-functional gear we'll still take for free recycling.

Frequently asked questions

How much does e-waste pickup cost?

Individuals pay a flat $99 for pickups within 10 miles of Asheville, regardless of load size. Businesses with 25 or more items get free pickup. Outside our radius, drop-off is always free at our Asheville location.

Do you actually destroy the data on drives?

Yes — every device with storage gets its data destroyed to NIST 800-88 standards before leaving our facility. Working drives are sanitized via cryptographic erase or multi-pass overwrite; drives that can't be sanitized are physically destroyed. Our destruction guarantee is included free for every customer.

What's the deal with certificates of destruction?

Individual customers can purchase per-drive certificates of destruction for $25 each. Businesses receive a free inventory manifest plus a bulk destruction guarantee by default; if you need individualized per-drive certificates for an audit or regulatory compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.), those are $25 per drive as well.

What exactly do you accept?

Basically anything with a circuit board — computers, monitors, phones, networking gear, printers, appliances small and large, power tools, arcade machines, you name it. If you're dropping off, please give us a quick call at (828) 545-0294 first so we know to expect you. For pickups, anything appliance-sized or larger needs to be disclosed on the form so we bring the right vehicle (pickup truck or trailer).

How quickly can you pick up my e-waste?

Submit the pickup request form and we'll get in touch within one business day to schedule. Most pickups happen within a week. Need something urgent? Call us directly at (828) 545-0294 and we'll see what we can do.

Is my address too far for pickup?

Our service area is a 10-mile radius from downtown Asheville — that covers Biltmore Forest, Arden, Fletcher, Candler, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Fairview, and most of the surrounding WNC region. Outside that radius, you're welcome to drop off free at our Asheville location, or contact us for an out-of-radius pickup quote.

How much does it cost to recycle a TV or monitor?

Screens carry a per-unit disposal fee because of the leaded glass and hazardous components that require EPA-compliant handling: computer monitors are $10 each, TVs 30"–49" are $15 each, TVs 50" or larger are $20 each, and plasmas or CRTs of any size are $20 each. Fees apply to both pickup and drop-off, and are the same for individuals and businesses.

Do you take CRT and plasma TVs?

Yes. Plenty of recyclers refuse CRTs and plasmas because of the leaded glass and hazardous components — we take them. All CRTs and plasmas are $20 per unit regardless of size. A single CRT holds 2–8 lbs of lead baked into the funnel glass as radiation shielding, plus cadmium and BFRs — that's why they're banned from NC landfills and need specialized handling.

Do I need to do anything to my phone before recycling it?

Yes — and this is the single most important thing. Sign out of your Apple ID (iPhone) or Google account (Android) before you factory-reset the phone or hand it off. If the account is still attached, the phone becomes Activation Locked (Apple) or FRP-locked (Android), which means no one can reset, resell, or reuse it — its reuse value drops to zero and it goes straight to shredding. On iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Sign Out, then Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. On Android: Settings → Accounts → Google → Remove Account, then factory reset. If you forget the password, deal with it before wiping — recovery is nearly impossible after the fact.

Do you pay for old electronics?

Scrap Circuit itself is a recycling service, not a resale shop. But our sister shop, Biltmore Computers, buys laptops, desktops, all-in-ones, and high-end phones/tablets that are less than ~3 years old — even with issues we can repair. Give us a call at (828) 545-0294 to set up a free, no-obligation appraisal at 5 Miller Rd South. See the "Sell it instead" section above for details.
